Jaguar Land Rovers New Strategy: The electric car is not getting cheaper, it is becoming an even greater luxury

JLR's unconventional strategy: Future electric models will be more expensive than thermal ones. What does this mean for the Romanian market?

While most global automakers are fighting a fierce battle to achieve price parity between electric (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, British group Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has decided to completely change the rules of the game. In an announcement that contradicts current industry trends, JLR officials have confirmed that their future 100% electric models will have higher purchase prices than their petrol or diesel equivalents.

Against the tide: Why is JLR refusing price parity?

For years, the automotive industry has considered price parity the “Holy Grail” of the transition to electromobility. The basic idea is simple: for mass adoption to occur, an electric car should cost the same as a similar fossil-fueled model. However, JLR rejects this financial compromise, relying on a bold premise: an electric model is, by definition, superior to a combustion one.

“We’re trying to go against the grain,” said Leonard Hoornik, JLR’s group chief commercial officer. “Our job is to explain to customers that the best Range Rover ever has an electric battery and powertrain.”

Through this approach, JLR wants to position electric technology not as an ecological obligation or an economic alternative, but as the pinnacle of luxury and performance, thus justifying an additional cost to the buyer.

Massive offensive: 5 new electric models in the next 2 years

To implement this new vision, the British group is preparing a strong product offensive. Over the next two years, JLR will launch 5 fully electric models, designed to reconfigure its brand portfolio:

  • Range Rover Electric: Promised to be the quietest and most refined Range Rover ever created, keeping the legendary off-road abilities intact.
  • Jaguar Type 01: The model that will mark the complete rebirth of the Jaguar brand, repositioned in an ultra-luxury and exclusive area, ready to compete directly with brands such as Bentley or Porsche.
  • Defender Electric: A zero-emission version of the famous off-roader, promising instant torque ideal for tackling rough terrain.
  • Two other electric models (from the Range Rover and Discovery ranges) will complete this list in the near future.

What is the situation of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in Romania?

In Romania, the British group's presence is closely linked to Premium Auto (part of ?iriac Group), the official importer that manages the two brands locally. Distribution and after-sales services are ensured through a stable network of authorized dealers in major cities, including ?iriac Auto (Bucharest and Bra?ov), RMB Inter-Auto (Cluj-Napoca), Exclusiv Auto (Constan?a), Casa Auto (Ia?i) and Brit Motor Ag (Pite?ti).

Market division: Land Rover dominates, Jaguar reinvents itself

  • Land Rover (Range Rover, Defender, Discovery range): Enjoys solid popularity on the domestic market. Models such as the Range Rover Sport, Evoque or the robust Defender are highly appreciated by Romanian premium vehicle customers due to the status they confer, the interior luxury and the 4x4 capabilities, being highly visible in the big cities. The Mild-Hybrid (MHEV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) versions currently dominate the brand's local sales.
  • Jaguar: It is in a period of deep and discreet transition. The manufacturer has drastically reduced the availability of its traditional models with internal combustion engines on the Romanian market, preparing the ground and educating the public for the radical transformation into an exclusively electric brand of ultra-premium niche.

What does the new strategy mean for the Romanian buyer?

For customers in Romania, JLR's decision to increase the price of electric cars will further reinforce the exclusivity of these vehicles. In a domestic market where government subsidies for electric vehicles (through the Rabla Plus program) have suffered substantial reductions in recent years, the decision to sell a Range Rover Electric or a Jaguar Type 01 at a higher price than the thermal variants clearly shows that JLR is not aiming for high sales volumes. The group will focus strictly on a niche of buyers willing to pay a premium value to own what the manufacturer calls "the best possible technological version."
