Opel Astra turns 35 - history, performance, the electric version Impuls III and the success in Romania

35 years of Opel Astra F - the history of the best-selling car in the brand's history and its huge impact in Romania

It was 1991, in a world in the midst of geopolitical and social reconfiguration. In the midst of global change, the German manufacturer from Rüsselsheim launched a model that would redefine the compact class and make history: the Opel Astra F.

Today, 35 years after its debut, the first generation Astra remains a giant that is hard to beat: with 4.13 million units sold between 1991 and 1997, the Astra F holds the title of the best-selling model in the entire history of the Opel brand.

A visionary recipe for a changing world

In the early 1990s, drivers' preferences were changing radically. Customers were no longer looking for just a simple means of transportation, but wanted a car that was comfortable, spacious, safe, but above all, more fuel-efficient and more environmentally friendly.

The Opel Astra F ticked all these requirements right from the start. To maximize interior space, Opel engineers moved the windshield forward by 74 millimeters, providing an enviable amount of passenger space in the compact segment.

Unprecedented diversity: from the GSi version to the Bertone Cabriolet

The 1991 launch brought the first body variants to showrooms, along with a sporty version that caused a stir:

  • 5-door hatchback and Caravan (station wagon) variant – the mainstays of the range.
  • Astra GSi – the performance variant intended for those seeking adrenaline.
  • Notchback (4-door sedan) – launched a year later, in 1992, appreciated for its elegance.
  • Astra Cabriolet – the convertible version designed by the famous Italian coachbuilder Bertone, presented in 1993.

Under the hood, customers could choose from a wide range of gasoline engines — from 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and up to 2.0-liter units — as well as economical 1.7-liter diesel engines.

A pioneer in safety and electric mobility

In terms of safety, the Astra F set new standards in its class. The body structure included steel door bumpers and pre-tensioner seat belts. From 1994, the focus on safety was further increased, with airbags for the driver and front passenger becoming standard equipment.

Pioneering Electric: Opel Astra Impuls III (1993–1997)

Few people know that the Astra F was also a testbed for the electric future. The Astra Impuls III project proved that 100% electric propulsion is feasible three decades ago. Although it did not enter series production, the fleet of 10 prototypes has driven over 350,000 kilometers, reaching a top speed of 120 km/h and offering a range of 150 km.

The Astra F Phenomenon in Romania: From Transition Car to Second-Hand Legend

If globally the Astra F was a huge sales success, on the Romanian market the model gained an almost cult status.

In the 90s and early 2000s, when the domestic car market was timidly opening up to Western cars, the Opel Astra F was for many Romanians the first foreign car in the family — the natural step from the old Dacia 1310s to German comfort and engineering.

Why did it conquer the Romanian market?

  • Legendary reliability: The 1.6-liter gasoline and 1.7-liter diesel engines proved extremely resistant to the difficult road conditions and fuel of the time.
  • Cheap maintenance: Affordable spare parts and simple mechanics made the Astra F the ideal car for the budget of Romanian families.
  • Dominance on the used market: Even after production ended in 1997 (and continued as the Astra Classic), the Astra F continued to be at the top of searches on the used import market for years.

For Romanians, the Astra F was not just a car from the sales figures of an automotive giant, but a true symbol of freedom of movement during the transition period, proving its durability on the country's roads for decades.

Conclusion

35 years after the first model rolled off the assembly line, the Opel Astra F remains not only an emblem of the '90s and the best-selling model in the brand's history, but also the car that set millions of people — including entire generations of Romanians — in motion.
