Electric dominance in the commercial market: Kia PV5 becomes the best-selling mid-size electric van in Europe in the first half of 2026
Bucharest / Frankfurt — South Korean brand Kia's strategic bet on the commercial vehicle segment designed natively on an electric architecture has proven to be a winning move. According to the latest data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), the new Kia PV5 was the best-selling mid-range electric commercial vehicle in Europe in the first six months of 2026, consolidating its position as the clear leader.
A record half-year for the electric utility market in Europe
The European plug-in light commercial vehicle (e-LCV) sector is experiencing accelerated expansion. Sales of electric commercial vehicles in Europe increased by 37.5% in the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The market share of electric commercial vehicles has seen a significant jump, reaching 13.9% of the total LCV market (compared to 10.2% in the first half of last year).
In this extremely competitive context, the Kia PV5 achieved a remarkable performance:
- 13,116 copies sold in the first 6 months of the year.
- 37% market share in the mid-range electric van segment.
- 1st place in sales rankings in 12 European countries, including major markets such as Germany, the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
E-GMP.S architecture and PBV strategy: The secret to success
Unlike many competitors in the market that use platforms adapted from internal combustion models, the Kia PV5 was designed from the ground up as a 100% electric commercial vehicle. Developed on the new E-GMP.S (Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service) platform, the model is part of Kia’s PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) vision.
This modular approach has allowed the launch of three main variants on the market:
- PV5 Cargo: Volume-optimized, low-floor, flat-floor cargo van designed for urban courier and logistics fleets.
- PV5 Passenger: Variant dedicated to passenger transport and urban shuttle/ride-hailing services, offering up to 7 seats and high comfort.
- PV5 Chassis Cab: Chassis-cab platform for special bodies (dump trucks, refrigerated superstructures or mobile workshops).
Efficiency Records: From the Guinness World Record to the Nordic El Prix Test
Energy efficiency and real autonomy were the main pillars that convinced fleet managers across Europe:
- Guinness World Record: The PV5 Cargo Long Range variant has set an official world record after travelling 693.38 kilometres on a single charge, carrying its maximum authorised payload of 665 kg. The test was carried out under real-world conditions on a mixed route near Frankfurt, monitored and certified by TÜV Hessen.
- Performance in El Prix Norway: In the famous Nordic El Prix autonomy test, the PV5 Passenger variant exceeded its official WLTP homologated autonomy, managing to travel 420 kilometers in real road conditions.
Romanian Market: Dynamics and Top of Mid-Class Electric Vans
In Romania, the electrification process of commercial fleets is following an upward curve, driven by the development of low-emission zones in large urban agglomerations, the digitalization of "last-mile" logistics and the reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO).
The entry of the Kia PV5 into the domestic market in the first half of 2026 quickly reconfigured the options of fleet buyers, placing the South Korean model at the forefront of the mid-size e-LCV segment.
