The future of the Porsche 718 is official - the brand's management confirms the launch of the electric version of the Boxster and Cayman
The Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman, the most affordable models in the German brand's portfolio, were discontinued in October last year. Since then, the two flagship models have been awaiting a direct successor, the launch of which has been postponed several times due to the Zuffenhausen manufacturer's strategy adjustments.
The successor to the 718 was originally supposed to be an all-electric model and be launched last year. However, after the brand's overall electrification plan was adjusted due to the development of electric car sales, Porsche changed its mind and announced that the new 718 will eventually also benefit from a version with combustion engines.
Later, uncertainties arose regarding whether the electric version would remain in the production plans, with speculation even ceasing it altogether. However, the rumors proved unfounded, and the successor to the Porsche 718 will eventually have a 100% electric version.
Decision confirmed on economic criteria
The information was confirmed by Porsche CEO Michael Leiters. In an interview with the German press, the brand official clarified the company's position:
"With the 718 electric, we came to the conclusion that we will build the model because it is the best solution economically and it will be a fantastic car."
The decision comes amid strong global sales results. Last year, Porsche sold just under 280,000 cars worldwide. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 22.2 percent of total sales, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) accounted for 12.1 percent.
Moreover, a historic first was recorded on the European market: Porsche sold more electrified cars than models with purely thermal engines, the former representing 57.9% of total European deliveries.
Price estimation on the Romanian market
The new Porsche 718 will remain positioned below the 911 range, but the integration of new propulsion technologies and electrical architectures will bring a price increase compared to the old generation (which started in Romania at approximately €65,000 - €70,000 including VAT).
