VW ID. Polo GTI: The brands first 100% electric performance model has been officially launched

Volt Revolution: Volkswagen launches the new ID. Polo GTI – The first electric chapter in the 50-year legend

Nürburgring, Germany – In a symbolic moment on the legendary “Green Hell” circuit, Volkswagen has lifted the curtain on the most anticipated model of its new era: the ID. Polo GTI. Officially unveiled at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, this hot hatch marks the first time that the iconic three letters, GTI, have been applied to a 100% electric production model.

More than half a century after the debut of the first Golf GTI, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer is proving that driving excitement can survive the transition to battery-powered propulsion.

Exterior design: The red stripe tradition in the digital age

The new ID. Polo GTI does not hide its pedigree. Although its shapes are dictated by aerodynamic efficiency, the designers have retained the visual elements that have defined entire generations of enthusiasts. The front is dominated by the famous red stripe, now integrated under the IQ.Light LED Matrix headlights. A unique detail is the GTI inscription created in 3D style, which gives the car an aggressive and modern presence.

The bumper has been completely redesigned, adopting an oversized air intake with a “honeycomb” pattern, flanked by two red vertical elements directly inspired by motorsport. At the rear, dynamism is emphasized by a split roof spoiler and a generous aerodynamic diffuser. The car runs on 19-inch wheels, and optionally high-performance Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, specially developed to handle the instant torque of the electric motor, can be ordered.

Retro-tech interior: Physical buttons and legendary upholstery

The interior of the new ID. Polo GTI is a love letter to old-school fans, but with an ultra-modern execution. Volkswagen listened to user criticism and introduced a row of physical buttons below the 12.9-inch central screen, making it easier to control essential functions.

The interior's strengths include:

  • Sports seats with "Clark" upholstery: The checkered design, inspired by the first-generation Golf GTI, is now reinterpreted, with the GTI logo integrated into the headrests.
  • "Vintage" display mode: The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster can simulate the analog clocks of classic GTI models.
  • Sports steering wheel with "12 o'clock" marking: Red stitching and paddles for adjusting energy recovery complete the racing cockpit atmosphere.

Despite its compact dimensions (approximately 4.1 meters long), the MEB+ electric platform offers surprising interior space. The luggage compartment has a generous volume of 441 liters, surpassing many models in the upper compact class.

Performance: The fastest "Polo" ever

Underneath the muscular bodywork is an electric motor that delivers 226 horsepower and 290 Nm, sent exclusively to the front wheels. This configuration allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h.

To ensure roadholding worthy of the GTI name, German engineers equipped the model with:

  1. Electronically locked front differential, which optimizes traction in tight corners.
  2. Adaptive DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) suspension, which allows the driver to choose between comfort and extreme sporty stiffness.
  3. GTI Experience Manager, a system that allows the simulation of the gearshift character and exhaust sound of historical GTI models (such as the 1976 GTI or the 16V versions).

Autonomy and price

The ID. Polo GTI uses a 52 kWh (net) battery, offering a range of up to 424 kilometers (WLTP). The 105 kW fast charging capacity allows for a 10% to 80% charge in just 24 minutes, making it usable not only for the city, but also for weekend getaways.

Although official prices for the Romanian market have not yet been announced, in Germany the model is estimated to start at around 39,000 euros. The first units are expected on the roads towards the end of this year, marking the beginning of a new era in which the "Hot Hatch" no longer needs gasoline to generate adrenaline.
