Transalpina officially reopens: Drivers return to the "King's Road", but with strict schedule and tonnage restrictions
Lovers of spectacular mountain landscapes and adrenaline on serpentines have reason to rejoice! Road traffic on the Transalpina (DN 67C), one of the most spectacular and high roads in Romania, is officially reopening on the sector between the Rânca resort and the Curpat locality.
The decision to reopen was made following rigorous safety checks carried out on the ground by a special commission, made up of representatives of the National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR), DRDP Craiova and DRDP Cluj. The commission gave the green light to traffic, ensuring that the road meets the necessary conditions for the safety of drivers, after the winter period when the road was blocked by snow.
Daily schedule: How traffic will be in the coming months
Even if the stretch of road becomes accessible, drivers will not be able to travel at any time of the day or night. For safety reasons — specific to a high-altitude road where weather conditions can change drastically in a matter of minutes — the authorities have imposed time restrictions. In the first months of summer, traffic will be allowed exclusively during the day, according to the following schedule:
| Calendar Period | Permitted Time Interval | Notes |
| May 29 – June 30 | 09:00 AM – 08:00 PM | Restricted schedule for the beginning of the season |
| July 1 – August 31 | 07:00 AM – 09:00 PM | Extended schedule (more permissive hours during peak season) |
Starting September 1, the authorities will analyze the opportunity to modify this program, depending on the evolution of weather conditions and visibility on the route.
Tonnage restrictions: Who has access to Transalpina?
In addition to the time restrictions, a strict weight limit applies on the Rânca — Curpat sector. The splendor of the mountain landscapes will only be able to be admired from the wheel of cars and light vehicles.
Important: Road traffic is only allowed for vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of 3.5 tons. All heavy vehicles, including trucks or large buses, are prohibited on this road sector.
Recommendations for drivers
Although the road has been cleared and prepared for traffic, drivers are advised to drive with extreme caution, to respect speed limits and temporary road signs. Also, as this is a ridge area, it is recommended that vehicles be technically checked before departure, especially the braking system.
