Offensive in the supermini segment: The new BYD Dolphin G DM-i promises over 1,000 km of autonomy and comes to Europe
The European B-segment car market is about to receive an extremely serious competitor. Chinese giant BYD has published the first details and official images of the Dolphin G DM-i, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback designed from the ground up specifically for global markets and customers on the Old Continent. Unlike other models in the range, which were later adapted for export, this represents an absolute strategic first for the Chinese manufacturer, being natively designed for European requirements.
Urban dimensions, designed for big cities
Visually and structurally, the new Dolphin G DM-i is a compact but volume-optimized format. It is 4.16 meters long and 1.82 meters wide, dimensions that place it firmly in the heart of the supermini segment, competing directly with established models such as the Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio or Toyota Yaris. However, its aerodynamic profile and generous wheelbase promise excellent modularity of the interior space, offering a family-friendly cabin without sacrificing the agility needed in busy urban traffic.
The technology behind the 1,000 kilometer barrier
The great innovation with which BYD wants to redefine this class lies in its propulsion system. While most European rivals offer either simple internal combustion engines or classic full-hybrid (HEV) systems, the Dolphin G relies on the advanced Super Hybrid DM-i (Dual Mode intelligent) architecture.
Although full technical specifications will be detailed at the official launch in June, the system configuration is based on the new DM-i 5.0 platform, also found on the Atto 2 compact SUV. The assembly uses a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that operates efficiently in the Atkinson cycle (predominantly acting as a generator) coupled with a main electric motor on the front axle, capable of developing around 194 horsepower.
According to preliminary data, customers will have two options for the battery based on LFP Blade technology: a compact 7.8 kWh version, ideal for strictly covering the daily urban commute, and an extended 18 kWh version, intended for those who want a more generous purely electric range. Intelligent management of the energy flow between the battery and the combustion engine allows for remarkable efficiency, with the car easily exceeding the 1,000 kilometer threshold of combined range with both tanks full.
Estimated prices and availability in Romania
The commercial launch on European markets will begin in the coming weeks, and the first units are expected to arrive in showrooms by the end of this summer or early fall.
A strategically important aspect for customers in our region is logistics: the BYD Dolphin G DM-i is to be assembled right in Europe, at the new state-of-the-art plant in Szeged, Hungary. This will guarantee much faster delivery times and protect the model from additional customs duties applied to cars imported directly from China.
Although official price lists for Romania have not yet been announced, in the UK, specialist publications estimate a starting price of under 20,000 pounds. For the local market, we can expect a starting price estimated at 22,000 - 24,000 euros before the application of any government subsidies. Such a positioning would instantly transform the new model into the most affordable plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car available in Romania, representing a highly competitive alternative to classic hybrids in the segment.
