Dacia Sandero regains first position in Europe's top car sales in April
After a start to the year marked by logistical bottlenecks and production restructuring, the budget hatchback reconfirms its status as a leader on the Old Continent.
Dacia Sandero has once again demonstrated that it is an extremely resilient model in the face of fluctuations in the European car market. After the first three months of 2026 in which it was in a recovery race, the Mioveni manufacturer's model spectacularly returned in April to the top position in the top of registrations in Europe, surpassing traditional rivals such as the Peugeot 208 and Volkswagen Golf.
From agony to ecstasy: The road back to the top in 2026
The year 2025 ended in celebration for the Dacia Sandero, which was crowned the best-selling model on the continent. However, the first pages of the 2026 calendar brought big headaches for the brand's officials.
A series of severe logistical problems — including adverse weather conditions in the Strait of Gibraltar that blocked shipments from factories in Morocco — combined with production changes dictated by the launch of facelifted versions, led to an unexpected collapse. In January, the Sandero fell dramatically to 14th place, recording a 45% drop in deliveries compared to the same period last year.
However, the brand's management assured the market that customer interest remained as high as ever, and that it was just a temporary inability to deliver. The predictions quickly came true, and the charts took a positive turn:
- February: Rapid rise to 5th place.
- March: Consolidation in 4th position.
- April: Regaining the European leadership seat.
April podium: Sandero takes victory by a comfortable margin
In April, Dacia Sandero was registered in 19,305 units, marking an increase of 2.3% compared to the same month in 2025. The model from Mioveni managed to put a safe distance from the second place occupant, the Peugeot 208, and the legendary Volkswagen Golf, which completes the podium.

Data centralized at European level by the analysis company Dataforce also highlights a major setback for the Renault Clio (-18%), a model that dominated the beginning of this year, but which lost steam in the fourth month of the year.
The fight in the first 4 months: Renault Clio remains on guard
Although April clearly belonged to the Dacia model, the overall cumulative ranking for the period January - April 2026 tells a slightly different story, reflecting the impact of that black January for Sandero.
Despite the setback suffered in April, Renault Clio maintains its first position overall for the first four months of the year, with a total of 71,996 units (down slightly by 3.7%). Dacia Sandero occupies the second position, being prepared for the final assault in the summer months to defend its title of "queen of Europe". The last step of the podium cumulated for the first four months is awarded to Volkswagen Golf.
Once the logistics chains have stabilized and the production of the new facelift variants is operating at full capacity, the duel in the coming months between Dacia Sandero and Renault Clio promises to be one of the closest in recent years on the continental auto market.
