THE HERESY OF MARANELLO: Ferrari Luce Divides the World in Two

The first zero-emission model in the brand's history offers 1,050 HP, a 5-seat cabin designed by iPhone designers, and an astronomical price for the Romanian market.

The Maranello-based manufacturer has just officially unveiled the model that is sure to divide the automotive world into two irreconcilable camps. It is the Ferrari Luce (internal code Type F222), the first zero-emission vehicle in the history of the legendary Italian brand. In an era when direct competitors are backing away from full electrification, Ferrari is making the riskiest bet of the modern era, proving that pure performance can survive without the symphony of a V8 or V12 engine.

Unveiled at an exclusive, secretive event in Rome, the new Luce represents a complete break with the past. For the brand’s purists – known as the Tifosi – the news of a completely silent car is seen as heresy. However, Ferrari’s management, led by CEO Benedetto Vigna, insists that electrification is not an abandonment of the brand’s heritage, but a new way to push the boundaries of dynamics and engineering to the extreme.


Impressive dimensions and unprecedented aerodynamics

Before analyzing the aesthetic revolution, the dimensions of the new Ferrari Luce place this model in the area of large luxury vehicles, exceeding the conventional standards of a classic supercar. The overall length reaches an impressive 5,026 millimeters, the width measures 1,999 mm, while the height is stopped at 1,544 millimeters. The generous wheelbase, of 2,961 millimeters, offers a record interior space for the Italian manufacturer.

The vehicle’s curb weight reaches 2,260 kilograms. While that may seem high to traditional fans, the Luce is actually almost 400 kilograms lighter than other luxury hyper-EVs on the market. This performance was achieved by integrating the battery pack as a direct structural element into the chassis made of 75% recycled aluminum, increasing torsional rigidity by 35% compared to the Purosangue crossover.

The absence of a massive thermal engine block at the front has unleashed the imagination of the engineers. The Ferrari Luce manages to achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.254 Cd, a remarkable value obtained purely by optimizing the geometric "teardrop" shapes, without the need for complex active aerodynamic systems or prominent ailerons.


Drawn by the parents of the iPhone

Ferrari wanted Luce to be a technological manifesto developed from scratch and that transcends the conventional. That is why the exterior and interior design were entrusted to the prestigious independent studio LoveFrom, founded by Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson – the legendary designers responsible for the aesthetics of the first iPhone and many other iconic Apple products. The collaboration with Centro Stile Ferrari resulted in lines of surgical precision and striking geometric purity.

Luce marks an absolute first in the history of the brand: it is the first production Ferrari to adopt a four-door, five-seat configuration (with a full bench seat in the back, as opposed to the strict 4-seat configuration of the Purosangue). The fluid bodywork hides centrally opening doors and a rear hatch that opens the largest boot ever designed at Maranello, with a volume of 597 litres.

Another absolute novelty is the wheels: Luce is equipped with the largest rims ever fitted to a production model of the brand, measuring 23 inches on the front axle and 24 inches on the rear axle. Customers can choose between two dramatic variants: classic forged rims with a five-spoke design, or rims with an aerodynamic turbine profile, capable of reducing rolling resistance by a further 5%.

Despite the modern minimalism, the connection with the past has not been completely severed. The rear end houses four circular taillights, a direct and nostalgic reference to iconic models such as the 360 Modena and 458 Italia. The launch colour palette proposes exclusive shades, specially created to reflect light in a unique way: Azzurro la Plata, Giallo Luce, Rosso Dino, Bianco Artico and the explosive Rosso Fiammante.


High-tech interior: Perfect mix of OLED screens and physical buttons

Inside, LoveFrom designers have applied a philosophy focused on purity of materials and maximum ergonomics. The dashboard combines state-of-the-art digital displays with essential physical buttons, with Ferrari ditching the capacitive touchpads criticized on previous models in favor of precise mechanical controls made from recycled aluminum.

The digital architecture is structured on four major strategically placed screens:

  • The central infotainment screen measures 12.9 inches;
  • The digital instrument cluster in front of the driver is 12 inches;
  • The front passenger gets their own 10.1-inch display;
  • Rear passengers benefit from a dedicated 6.3-inch screen, placed on the center console.

Luxury details are everywhere: the gear selector is made of polished solid glass, the key contact slot is fully illuminated, and the key itself integrates Corning Gorilla Glass technology and configurable E Ink screens. The front seats come standard with heating, with a massage function available as an option. For acoustic enthusiasts, Ferrari offers the optional Ferrari Audio Signature audio system with 21 speakers and a devastating 3,000 W of power.


Four engines, 1,050 hp and electrifying dynamics

The soul of the new Ferrari Luce is a powertrain developed entirely in-house at Maranello. The system uses four independent electric motors (one for each wheel), arranged in a special configuration called the “Halbach array” (a technology taken from Formula 1, which directs the magnetic flux directly to the stator to maximize torque density).

Power resources transform radically depending on the driving mode selected at the steering wheel:

  1. Range mode (435 HP / top speed 260 km/h): Disconnects the front axle for maximum efficiency and range preservation, with driving predominantly on the rear axle.
  2. Tour mode (625 HP / top speed 260 km/h): Activates intelligent all-wheel drive, optimized for comfort over long distances.
  3. Performance Mode (986 HP / top speed 310 km/h): Opens the aggressive dynamic system, instantly delivering torque to both axles for sporty control.
  4. Boost mode (1,050 HP and 990 Nm / top speed 310 km/h): Unlocks the full potential of the four electric motors.

To activate the maximum potential in Boost mode and the Launch Control function, the driver must pull a special helicopter-style lever handle, mounted directly on the roof console. From that moment on, the Ferrari Luce sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, while the 0 to 200 km/h sprint is achieved in just 6.8 seconds.


Balanced battery life and sound management

The 122 kWh battery promises an official range of up to 530 kilometers on a single charge. Ferrari management explained that it was not aimed at setting an absolute range record (which would have required a heavier battery), but rather at prioritizing driving dynamics. Thanks to the advanced electrical architecture at 800V, the system supports DC fast charging of up to 350 kW, allowing the injection of 70 kWh into the battery in just 20 minutes.

To compensate for the lack of a combustion engine, engineers have created a revolutionary external and internal amplification system. Using accelerometers mounted around key points of the powertrain, the car captures the natural mechanical sounds generated by the rotation of the engines (which reach up to 30,000 rpm) and processes them in real time, providing an “authentic and functional” audio-acoustic experience both inside and outside the cabin.


Market impact and availability in Romania

Order lists for the Ferrari Luce will be officially opened this year, with actual deliveries scheduled for early 2027. In Europe, official list prices start at around 550,000 euros for the base variants in Italy, but for the Romanian market, the estimated starting price will be around 520,000 euros (approximately 2.6 million lei) before registration taxes and customization options (which can double the price).

Despite the prohibitive price tag and initial wave of reluctance on social media, analysts anticipate huge demand based on the strictly limited production volume and the profile of the new customer the brand is attracting: young tech millionaires who have never owned a Ferrari before but are looking for absolute excellence in electric form. It remains to be seen whether Luce will light the way for the future for Maranello or whether it will remain a fascinating anomaly in the brand's history.
