Audi stops production of the A8 model due to weak sales and the new generation is delayed until 2030

Only 966 units sold in Europe! Audi draws the line and discontinues production of the A8 sedan

The luxury sedan segment is going through a period of profound transformation, and one of the most representative emblems of the executive class is preparing for an early retirement. The current Audi A8 will be taken out of production earlier than initially expected, the background being marked by a sharp decline in demand in European markets.

Decline in sales and decision to withdraw from production

Despite its status as the flagship of the Ingolstadt range, the Audi A8 has seen increasingly modest deliveries in recent years. The alarm bell was raised by recent results: in August, only 966 units were sold across Europe, a figure that reflects the pressure exerted both by customers' shift to the luxury SUV segment and the rapid advance of purely electric alternatives on the market.

Faced with these unfavorable commercial trends, the German manufacturer's management decided to stop production of the current generation, leaving a temporary gap in the brand's top-of-the-range portfolio.

The latest improvements received by the flagship

In an attempt to extend the life cycle of the current model and sustain buyer interest, Audi recently carried out a series of important aesthetic and technological updates.

The facelift brought to the fore a redesigned front end, dominated by a wider Singleframe grille, flanked by advanced optical blocks with Digital Matrix LED technology. At the rear, customizable digital OLED taillights completed the sedan's technological appearance.

Inside, the emphasis was on absolute refinement, integrating high-quality Valcona leather, seats with a complex massage function, an extensive digital display package with two central touchscreens and adaptive air suspension with predictive function.

Presence on the Romanian market: Local equipment, prices and performance

In the Romanian market, the Audi A8 has remained a prestigious choice for top business, government fleets and entrepreneurs seeking discretion and supreme comfort.

  • Available engines: The range includes powerful V6 and V8 engines, both petrol (55 TFSI) and diesel (50 TDI), along with the performance version of the Audi S8, which develops over 570 horsepower. Quattro all-wheel drive and tiptronic automatic transmission are offered as standard.
  • Equipment levels and prices: The model is configured in generous equipment lines, including variants with an increased wheelbase (A8 L). List prices for the Romanian market start at approximately 105,000 - 110,000 euros for the basic versions, quickly rising to 140,000 - 160,000 euros for the powerful or highly customized variants.
  • Sales dynamics in Romania: From a commercial point of view, the A8 occupies an exclusive niche locally, with annual deliveries of dozens of units, being surpassed in volume by the Q range SUVs (Q7 and Q8), but maintaining a loyal base of traditional customers.

The future: A new generation expected only in 2030 and the move to Leipzig

Future plans for the A8 successor indicate a radical change in strategy. The next generation of the sedan is not expected on the market until 2030 at the earliest.

In addition, the German manufacturer plans to move production of the future model from the current Neckarsulm plant — whose long-term future is becoming uncertain — to the Porsche plant in Leipzig. This move is no coincidence: the future Audi top-of-the-range and the next-generation Porsche Panamera will share the same advanced technical platform, optimizing production costs and synergies within the group.
