The king of hot hatches at Adâncata, the new VW Golf GTI Edition 50 breaks the FWD record on MotorPark Romania
The half-century anniversary of the legendary GTI acronym could not have been celebrated in a more spectacular way. Volkswagen has pushed the engineering limits of the performance compact and launched the Golf GTI Edition 50, the most powerful and fastest front-wheel drive Golf ever created. After rewriting history on the Nürburgring, the German model has also demonstrated its supremacy on Romanian soil, where it shattered the old record for front-wheel drive production cars on the MotorPark Romania circuit in Adâncata.
A tribute of 325 hp: The most powerful Golf GTI in history
The anniversary generation translates 50 years of tradition into a radical technical package. Under the hood is an optimized version of the 2.0-liter turbo engine (TSI), which develops an impressive 325 hp and maximum torque of 420 Nm.
Power is sent exclusively to the front axle via a DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The official figures reconfirm the heavyweight status in the hot hatch segment:
- 0 - 100 km/h: 5.3 seconds
- Top speed: 270 km/h (electronically limited)
This special edition marks a peak era for the German group's internal combustion engines and is produced in a strictly limited series during 2026.
Crowned on the Nürburgring: Dominance on the Green Hell
Before hitting the local circuits, the Golf GTI Edition 50 proved its potential on the most demanding track in the world: the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In the first official test, the German hot hatch stopped the clock at 7 minutes and 46.125 seconds on the 20.8-kilometer route, becoming the fastest road-legal Volkswagen model in history on this circuit. But the manufacturer didn't stop there: in a subsequent perfectly executed run, the car set a time of 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds, claiming the absolute title of the fastest front-wheel drive production car on the Nordschleife.
Historic record on MotorPark Romania with Ovidiu Zaberca
International performances were reconfirmed flawlessly on the most important asphalt circuit in Romania. Behind the wheel of the new Golf GTI Edition 50, Romanian driver Ovidiu "Zabi" Zaberca — a leading name in local motorsport, with over 15 years of competitive experience — attacked the ideal track at Adâncata.
The clock stopped at 1 minute and 55.273 seconds, setting a new historic milestone on MotorPark Romania for front-wheel drive production cars. The new model beat the old category record (1:57.189) by a massive 1.916 seconds, proving remarkable stability and braking resistance in the fast corners of the Ialomi?a circuit.
GTI Performance Package: The recipe behind the record time
The example that set the national record on MotorPark Romania was equipped with the optional GTI Performance, exactly the same technical configuration used to break the world record on the Nürburgring.
This performance package brings the chassis architecture back to an extremely competitive level:
- Semi-slick tires dedicated to track use, offering a superior level of lateral grip.
- 19-inch forged wheels, designed to reduce unrolled mass.
- Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, which optimizes gas flow and delivers an unmistakable sound.
- Sports suspension lowered by 20 millimeters, combined with dynamically adjustable adaptive dampers.
- Dedicated software calibration for the front axle limited slip differential and electronic dynamics control (VDM) systems.
Availability and price on the Romanian market
The anniversary model Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 is officially available for order in the dealer network in Romania.
- Starting price: From 48,315 euros (VAT included).
- Difference from the standard model: An increase of approximately 7,000 euros compared to the standard Golf GTI version, justified by the substantial increase in power (+59 hp compared to the standard GTI of 265 hp), the exclusive aesthetic package and the limited anniversary series status.
- Production period: As a collector's edition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first GTI (1976–2026), the model is assembled exclusively during 2026.
