Revolution for purists: Toyota patents the system that "turns off the engine" of an electric car if you shift into the wrong gear

In an era where electric vehicles (EVs) dominate the future plans of major manufacturers, fans of manual transmissions seem doomed to nostalgia. However, Toyota refuses to let the pleasure of classic driving die. The Japanese giant has taken a giant step in the development of a revolutionary technology: a simulated manual gearbox for electric cars, now capable of replicating even the driver's mistakes, going as far as "stumbling" the engine.


Realism taken to the extreme: Shift wrong, the car "stops"

Although other brands, such as Hyundai, have already experimented with gearshift simulation on performance models (such as the Ioniq 5 N), Toyota wants to offer an experience identical to that of a real mechanical transmission.

According to the new patent filed by the Japanese brand, the system will not only mimic the speed and sound of a combustion engine. It will directly punish piloting errors:

  • Engine stall simulation: If the driver releases the simulated clutch pedal too quickly or selects an incorrect gear when starting off, the system will simulate the electric motor stalling.
  • Dynamic Impact Sensor: The technology will physically induce those sudden movements and jerks specific to the moment a novice driver "drops" the clutch.
  • Intervention while driving: The system remains active even at high speeds. If an inappropriate lower gear is selected while driving, the car will automatically activate a braking function to simulate violent engine braking or mechanical imbalance.

How it works: The electric car will use advanced electric motor torque management software, combined with special actuators, to recreate the physical resistance of a manual transmission and clutch pedal.


Artificial Intelligence will measure driver skills

In addition to the huge increase in interactivity, Toyota's new patent also introduces an active monitoring component. The system will be able to assess the driver's skills in real time.

Depending on how precisely the driver coordinates the clutch and gear lever, the on-board computer will establish a competency profile. If the system detects that the situation is becoming dangerous due to incorrect maneuvers, it will promptly and intelligently activate the vehicle's safety systems to prevent a complete loss of control or an accident.


Saving the "Gazuu Racing" spirit in the electric age

For Toyota, this project is not just a marketing exercise, but a clear strategy to keep enthusiastic customers loyal to the brand even after the complete transition to zero emissions. Company executives have repeatedly suggested that future electric performance models in the GR (Gazoo Racing) range could be equipped with this technology.

It remains to be seen when this system will arrive on production models, but one thing is certain: Toyota's electric future will not be boring at all for those who love to change gears themselves.
