Toyota Hilux with hydrogen coming in 2028 with a range of 400 km and a towing capacity of 2.5 tons
A new era for Toyota Professional and commercial transport. At the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, Toyota confirmed the accelerated expansion of its commercial vehicle division. Sales of the Toyota Professional portfolio have almost doubled in the last five years, and the Japanese manufacturer has ambitious goals for 2030: reaching a threshold of 200.000 units sold annually on the European market and obtaining a market share of 8%.
The brand's strategy is based on diversifying propulsion solutions, from conventional thermal engines and hybrid systems, to 100% electric vehicles and hydrogen options.
Toyota Hilux FCEV: Over 400 km of autonomy and 2.500 kg of towing capacity
The main highlight was the official confirmation of the launch of a hydrogen-powered version of the legendary Hilux pick-up. The new model, which will be marketed under the name Hilux FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle), is scheduled for market launch in 2028.
Although final figures will be communicated closer to the time of series launch, Toyota has clear technical objectives for the Hilux FCEV:
- Autonomy of over 400 kilometers with a single hydrogen refueling.
- Towing capacity of 2,500 kilograms, maintaining practical usability for commercial and industrial activities.
The widespread adoption of this model will depend directly on the development of the specific infrastructure. Currently, a total of 179 stations are operating in Europe and the UK where hydrogen vehicles can be fueled, which is why initial availability will be concentrated in markets with already established fueling networks.
Current Toyota Hilux range in Romania: Equipment and prices
On the Romanian market, the Toyota Hilux remains a benchmark in the 4x4 utility vehicle segment, being recognized for its off-road capability and 310 mm ground clearance. The model is offered in several body styles (Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab), powered by the 2.4 D-4D (150 HP) and 2.8 D-4D (204 HP) diesel units, including versions equipped with a 48V Mild-Hybrid system.
Range of equipment and estimated prices in Romania (VAT included):
- Chassis / Single Cab (Utility Variant): Intended for fleets and intensive commercial use, it has a starting price of approximately €35,000 – €41,800.
- Hilux Executive / Trend: Offers a balance between comfort and utility, with a multimedia screen, automatic climate control and the Toyota Safety Sense safety package, priced between €43,000 and €49,000.
- Hilux Invincible / Mild-Hybrid 48V: Top-of-the-line equipment for mixed use (lifestyle and off-road) starts at around €50,000.
- Hilux GR Sport: The rally-inspired version, with revised suspension and aggressive visual details, exceeds the €52,000 – €55,000 threshold.
Availability and estimated price for Hilux FCEV in Romania
For the Romanian market, the hydrogen version of the Hilux FCEV is expected to become available between 2028–2029, the pace of introduction being directly linked to the expansion of the national network of hydrogen refueling stations.
From a financial point of view, given the complexity of the fuel cell system and the costs of the technology used, the estimated price for the Toyota Hilux FCEV on the Romanian market will be between €65,000 and €75,000 (VAT included).
