The BMW M3 retains its identity, the electric and thermal versions will bear the same historical name

The next generation electric BMW M3 will keep the legendary name, it will not be called iM3

The world of car enthusiasts has been buzzing with speculation over the past year about what the first all-electric M3 will be called. Many were betting on the "iM3", following the Munich-based manufacturer's current naming logic (such as i4 or i5). But the Bavarians' performance division has decided to put an end to the rumors: no matter what's under the hood, the legend remains unchanged.

Both the electric and the thermal version will bear the exact same name: BMW M3.

The official confirmation came directly from Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. His statement was blunt and full of respect for the model's nearly 40-year history:

"Of course it's called the M3. I've never said anything different, but I always find it interesting how people talk about the iM3. An M3 has always been an M3. Whether it had a 4-cylinder engine, a 6-cylinder, a V8 or had M xDrive, it was just always called the M3. That doesn't change even if it's electric."

Two worlds, same identity: Launch in 2027 and 2028

The transition to electric propulsion will not mean the instant disappearance of the combustion engine. BMW is planning a strategy for intelligent coexistence:

  • 2027 (Electric Version): It will be the first to appear on the market, developed on the new dedicated Neue Klasse architecture. This promises breathtaking dynamics thanks to a configuration with up to four electric motors and a revolutionary management system called "Heart of Joy".
  • 2028 (Thermal Version): Classic fans will receive a new M3 powered by the inline six-cylinder gasoline engine (S58), most likely assisted by mild-hybrid technology, developed on an updated CLAR platform, one year later.

Aesthetically, both cars will share a very similar exterior design language, retaining the brand's signature athletic proportions.

How much will the new electric BMW M3 cost in Romania?

Although BMW has not published official lists, brand representatives have already revealed that prices for the electric and gasoline variants will be "in the same ballpark."

To estimate a realistic price for the Romanian market, we refer to current marketing values:

  • Currently, the current generation BMW M3 Sedan starts in Romania at 89,072 Euros including VAT (74,850 Euros excluding VAT).
  • Top versions, such as the M3 Competition xDrive or the M3 Touring, quickly exceed the threshold of 101,000 Euros including VAT.

Taking into account the advanced 800V technology, new generation batteries and the complex all-wheel drive system with four electric motors, it is expected that the future electric BMW M3 will have an estimated starting price in Romania between 98,000 and 110,000 Euros including VAT for the basic version. The extreme performance variants will most likely exceed the 125,000 Euros threshold.

This repositioning will keep the model competitive against new electric rivals, while also offering an ultra-performance alternative for those who want to take the step towards the electrified future without giving up the legendary M3 badge.
