An unexpected alliance: Nissan could produce Chinese Chery models at its Sunderland plant

In order to streamline costs and maximize the return on its assets, the Japanese brand's management recently freed up one of the plant's production lines. This strategic move has a specific purpose: the freed-up line would be dedicated exclusively to the assembly of future models in the Chery range.
Strict ownership rules: Nissan has been keen to clarify the logistics from the start. The Sunderland plant will remain fully owned and managed by the Japanese brand. Furthermore, Chery models will be built by Nissan employees, ensuring that jobs are preserved and the factory's rigorous standards of workmanship are maintained.
The 2027 horizon and market impact
If the current negotiations materialize into a firm collaboration contract, the launch calendar is already outlined: production of the first Chery models in the UK could start in 2027.
