Massive Honda recall for one million cars. What Romanian drivers need to know

Safety alert: Honda recalls over a million vehicles due to puncture repair kit. Are cars in Romania affected?

A defect in the emergency kit sealant container can turn its cap into a dangerous “projectile” when used. The campaign targets hybrid and fuel cell models only.

Bucharest – Japanese automaker Honda, through its North American division (American Honda Motor Co.), has officially announced a massive recall campaign targeting no less than 1,049,883 vehicles. The decision, monitored by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), comes following the discovery of a manufacturing defect in the emergency tire repair kit (flat tire kit), a component that can endanger the safety of users at critical moments.

What is the technical problem and what risks does it involve?

The identified defect is not related to the engine, suspension or electronic running systems, but to the quick repair kit located in the trunk, intended to inflate and temporarily seal a tire in the event of a puncture. According to the official technical report, if the user operates the kit and the nozzle (connector) is not perfectly fixed to the tire valve, extremely high pressure can build up inside the sealing fluid container.

Due to a design flaw that included an unnecessary leak prevention valve and faulty adjustment of the safety valve by the kit supplier (TEK Corporation), this pressure cannot be released in a controlled manner. As a result, the canister lid can violently fail and come off, being propelled with enormous force. It essentially becomes a projectile capable of seriously injuring the driver or anyone in the vicinity of the wheel.

By the time the campaign was officially declared, the manufacturer had already registered 53 warranty claims and 8 confirmed cases of personal injury caused by this incident on the American market.

What models are targeted?

The voluntary recall campaign affects vehicles from the production years 2023 - 2026, equipped with environmentally friendly propulsion systems:

  • Honda CR-V Hybrid (models produced between December 2022 and May 2026) – constitutes the bulk of the recall, with 744,350 units affected.
  • Honda Accord Hybrid – 305,013 units.
  • Honda CR-V e:FCEV (hydrogen-powered variant) – a limited batch of 340 units (2025-2026 models).

To remedy the issue, authorized dealers will replace either the hose nozzle or the entire sealant container free of charge, with the new components featuring a revised design that eliminates the risk of pressure build-up.

Are Romanian models also affected?

The short answer is: officially, not at this time, but there are important exceptions that local drivers need to keep in mind.

1. Strictly regional campaign (USA/North America)

The current alert was issued by the authorities in the United States and applies exclusively to vehicles manufactured for the North American market. At the European level, through the European Commission's rapid alert system for dangerous products (Safety Gate / former RAPEX), no similar notification has been published by Honda for the network on the continent. Also, the official importer Honda Trading Romania does not have such a campaign active in our country for cars in its own network.

2. Accord Hybrid models are not officially sold in Europe

The Honda Accord Hybrid model of the targeted generation (2023-2026) is not part of the range officially marketed in Romania or the rest of Europe, being a sedan dedicated mainly to the US and Asian markets. Therefore, the risk associated with this model on our roads is almost non-existent.

3. The case of the Honda CR-V Hybrid (very popular SUV in Romania)

Although the Honda CR-V Hybrid is sold in significant volumes in Romania, batches destined for European customers are assembled in other global factories and often use other supply chains for secondary accessories, such as puncture kits. However, specialists do not completely rule out the possibility that, following global investigations, the campaign will be extended to Europe in the future if it is proven that batches of kits from TEK Corporation have also reached the trunks of European cars.

Essential recommendations for Honda car owners in Romania

Although the overall risk locally is minimal at this time, there are two categories of drivers who should be cautious:

  • Beware of second-hand cars imported from the US: The Romanian car market is full of cars brought from North America through parallel imports (often purchased at auctions). If you own a Honda CR-V Hybrid or an Accord Hybrid (model year 2023-2026) imported from the US, your car is directly affected. In this case, it is recommended that you DO NOT use the original puncture repair kit in the trunk and contact a local dealer for guidance.
  • Checking the Chassis Series (VIN): Any Honda vehicle owner in Romania who wants to get rid of uncertainties can access the local importer's official platform (hondatrading.ro), in the "Recalls and service updates" section, where entering the chassis series (VIN) from the registration document will instantly indicate whether the car is affected by any global or European safety alert.

Until the situation in Europe is fully clarified, a practical safety tip remains valid for all drivers: when using any tire repair kit with compressor, make sure that the connector is perfectly screwed onto the wheel valve before starting the flow of air and chemical, avoiding standing directly in front of the pressurized container.
