Jaguar says goodbye to combustion engines: production of the last combustion model has ended

A story ends: Jaguar stops production of the last internal combustion engine model

December 19, 2025 will go down in history as the unmistakable sound of petrol and diesel engines fell silent in Jaguar factories. At the British plant in Solihull, the last unit of the Jaguar F-Pace performance SUV left the assembly line, ending a 90-year era of thermal engineering.

This last example, a high-performance SVR model, has been painted in a special shade of black, a tribute to the last Jaguar E-Type produced in 1974. The car will not go to a private customer, but will be donated to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, becoming a museum piece.

A bet on the future: From pistons to electrons

Jaguar's decision to completely stop production of internal combustion (ICE) cars is part of a radical strategy called Reimagine. The British brand has chosen to take a deliberate "pause" from new car sales in many markets in order to prepare for a full rebirth in 2026.

Then, Jaguar will launch a new luxury electric GT, inspired by the Type 00 concept, which promises to redefine the brand. Until then, dealers around the world will focus on used models and after-sales services, preparing the ground for a range consisting exclusively of electric vehicles with prices that will exceed the 100,000 euro threshold.

Jaguar in Romania: The Success of the "British Cat" on Mioritic Lands

In Romania, Jaguar managed to build a solid image as an aspirational brand, being perceived as a characterful alternative to the German triad (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi). Although the total sales volume never matched the German giants, Jaguar had a loyal community of customers who appreciated British elegance.

1. Sales Champion: Jaguar F-Pace

Without a doubt, the Jaguar F-Pace has been the brand's most successful model in Romania. Since its launch in 2016, the SUV has dominated Romanians' preferences, often representing over 50% of the brand's annual sales locally.

  •     Why was it successful? Romanians preferred the combination of high ground clearance, all-wheel drive (essential for our roads) and the aggressive design signed by Ian Callum.
  •     Volumes: Although exact figures vary from year to year, during its peak periods, Jaguar sold between 150 and 250 new units annually (total range) in Romania, with the F-Pace being the main driver of these figures.

2. Other impactful models
  • Jaguar E-Pace: The compact SUV has caught on well among the female audience and those who drive predominantly in urban environments.
  • Jaguar XF: The mid-range limousine was the preferred choice for management fleets and entrepreneurs who wanted to stand out in office building parking lots.
  • Jaguar I-Pace: Although it was their first electric model, it had moderate success in Romania, being purchased mainly through Rabla Plus programs by technology enthusiasts.

What's next for fans in Romania?

For Romanian customers, the end of combustion engines means a transition to a very active premium second-hand market. On specialized platforms, the Jaguar F-Pace remains one of the most sought-after used models, retaining its value well due to its exclusivity.

Jaguar is leaving the internal combustion engine arena with its head held high, leaving behind an impressive legacy. It remains to be seen whether the electric future will manage to win the hearts of Romanians in the same way that the growl of the V8 engine on the old sports models did.
