Ford Otosan accelerates green transition in Craiova: 36.45 million lei photovoltaic park and plant sustainability strategy
A new step towards clean energy: The Craiova photovoltaic park. The manufacturer Ford Otosan continues the process of transforming the Craiova plant into one of the most modern and sustainable industrial hubs in Europe. As part of this endeavor, the company announced a new major investment: the construction of a photovoltaic park with an installed capacity of 5.10 MW on the site of the factory in Oltenia.
The project will generate approximately 5,531 MWh of renewable electricity annually, the entire amount to be used exclusively for the industrial platform's own consumption. By reducing dependence on the traditional energy grid, this initiative will contribute to reducing the factory's carbon footprint by approximately 3,385 tons of CO2 each year.
Investment structure and support through the Modernization Fund
The photovoltaic park project involves a total value of 36.45 million lei. To carry out this investment, Ford Otosan Romania has already signed the financing contract with the Ministry of Energy, obtaining a non-refundable financing of 8.63 million lei granted through the Modernization Fund. The difference necessary for the completion of the project will be covered from the company's own funds.
This capital allocation reconfirms the manufacturer's long-term commitment to sustainable production and operational cost optimization in the local market.
Craiova, European hub for electrification and green logistics
The new investment in renewable energy production complements a series of ambitious measures implemented in recent years at the Craiova plant, where approximately 5,500 employees work in 3 shifts. The B?nie plant has become a central pillar in the European electrification strategy, being the place where zero-emission models such as the Puma Gen-E, E-Transit Courier and E-Tourneo Courier are assembled, as well as the batteries for these vehicles.
In addition to greening the direct production process, the decarbonization strategy also targets the logistics chain. In February 2025, the company launched an intermodal rail transport route between Craiova and Turkey, a solution that allows for a 63% reduction in emissions associated with the transport of components compared to the road alternative. Thus, from generating its own electricity to assembling environmentally friendly vehicles and green rail transport, the Craiova plant is strengthening its role as a model in the energy transition of the automotive industry.
