Bentley Torcal - The British manufacturer opens the era of absolute electrification. Official details and estimated prices for Romania
The Crewe-based luxury carmaker has taken the first official step towards its radical transformation by revealing the name of the brand’s first all-electric production model. The new electric SUV will be called the Bentley Torcal, and its world debut has been set for September 23, 2026, at an exclusive event in London. The Torcal becomes the fourth model line in the brand’s current portfolio, joining the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga.
Geographic tradition and a tribute to electric torque
As fans of the brand have come to expect, the choice of name is no coincidence. Bentley continues its tradition of naming its creations after spectacular natural landmarks, a custom previously reflected in names such as Bentayga, Bacalar and Batur. This time, the inspiration comes from El Torcal de Antequera, a karst landscape in Andalusia, Spain, world-famous for its unique limestone formations, sculpted by the elements over millions of years.
Beyond the geographical component, the name also hides a clever linguistic game, perfectly adapted to the new era of mobility. The term "Torcal" has a strong etymological link to the Latin verb "torquere" (to twist), representing the very root from which the modern word "torque" (engine torque) was formed. Company officials emphasize that this symbolic duality perfectly reflects the instantaneous and effortless delivery of performance, a fundamental feature for Bentley in its 107 years of existence, but which takes on new valences with electric propulsion.
The promise of unprecedented dynamics
While full technical details are still being kept under wraps until the September event, the goals set for the new SUV are extremely ambitious. Late last year, Matthias Rabe, Bentley’s head of research and development, gave clear indications of the car’s dynamic behavior: “It will be as comfortable as the Flying Spur, as agile as the Continental GT, and its acceleration will be the best ever offered by a Bentley.”
To deliver these record-breaking figures in terms of range and charging speeds, Bentley Torcal will not develop an isolated architecture, but will take advantage of synergies within the Volkswagen Group. The British have confirmed that the new SUV will share major structural components with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV.
The Torcal will be built on an optimized version of the PPE (Premium Platform Electric), jointly developed by Porsche and Audi. This technical foundation guarantees the presence of an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture (which will allow for ultra-fast charging sessions), a dual-electric motor configuration for an extremely responsive all-wheel drive system, and state-of-the-art active systems for chassis and air suspension management.
Estimated prices for the Romanian market
Although Bentley Bucharest has not yet opened official order lists, the model's global positioning strategy provides clear indications of the price that future customers in Romania will have to pay for the first zero-emission Bentley.
The brand's management has suggested that the price of the new electric vehicle will have to remain in an area comparable to that of the current family SUV, the Bentayga, deliberately avoiding the astronomical thresholds imposed by rivals such as the Rolls-Royce Spectre. Considering local taxes and the starting prices of the current models in the showroom in the capital (where a Bentayga Azure or V8 Hybrid is around 250,000 - 270,000 euros), we can anticipate the following quotes for the Bentley Torcal on the Romanian market:
- Estimated starting price (base version): approximately €250,000 – €270,000 (including VAT, before options).
- Higher versions (top equipment / dynamics-oriented specifications): average configurations will quickly pass the €300,000 threshold.
- Launch or Mulliner editions: customized variants through the brand's exclusives division will easily exceed €360,000 – €400,000.
Beyond the considerable purchase price, Torcal promises to be an essential pillar in the long-term strategy of the British manufacturer, which has set itself the goal of becoming an exclusively electric brand by 2035. More details about the exterior design, battery capacity and real autonomy will be gradually revealed throughout the summer, before the first examples appear on the roads.
