Tesla Roadster finally becomes a production car - the official presentation takes place 9 years after the first reveal
The Odyssey of Delays – From 2017 Concept to Market Reality. Tesla has put an end to speculation by officially confirming the production version of the second-generation Tesla Roadster. Originally revealed in November 2017 as a working concept capable of top performance, the model has gone through a long series of delays.
Originally scheduled for series production in 2020, the electric supercar was repeatedly put on the back burner due to the technical challenges of the new platform, global lockdowns during the pandemic, and the company's prioritization of volume models.
Launch in Texas with aerospace-grade propulsion
The official launch event will take place on October 1 in the city of Waco, Texas. The production version promises a revised design compared to the prototype seen in 2017, adapted to modern aerodynamic requirements.
The centerpiece of the launch will be a demonstration of the optional SpaceX-inspired technology package. It integrates special thrusters derived from the aerospace industry. Elon Musk previously stated that these engines will allow the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in just 1.1 seconds, offering unprecedented dynamics for a production car.
Availability and estimated price for the Romanian market
Although the official presentation takes place on October 1, actual production is estimated to begin 12-18 months after launch, which places the first customers in Europe and Romania on the delivery list in 2028 at the earliest.
- Ordering system: Reservations can be made online through the official Tesla portal, based on an initial reservation fee.
- Base starting price: In the US, the announced price for the base version was $200,000, while the limited launch edition was listed at $250,000.
- Estimate for Romania (with taxes): Applying the costs of European homologation, international transport, import customs duty and 19% VAT, the starting price for the standard version on the Romanian market will be approximately €230,000 – €260,000. Selecting higher performance options could raise the final value towards the €300,000 threshold.
