From VDO tachographs to SDV vehicles - the news prepared by Aumovio for the Hanover Motor Show

The global transport industry is on the verge of a profound transformation, driven by acute staff shortages, the energy transition and the need for digitalization. In this context, German company Aumovio aims to redefine the way commercial vehicle fleets operate, preparing a suite of innovations to be demonstrated at the Hannover International Motor Show (September 14–20).

Aumovio's strategy is structured around four main pillars: maximizing efficiency, developing software-defined vehicles, implementing autonomous driving, and advancing electrification.


The VDO Ecosystem: Digital Tachographs and Unified Data Processing

The first major direction aims to streamline data processing through its subsidiary VDO. Aumovio is launching a new integrated digital ecosystem for digital tachographs, designed to automate the flow of information collected during trips.

The solution transforms compliance with legal regulations from a time-consuming administrative obligation into a productive operational process. By eliminating manual data entry, the VDO ecosystem improves the quality of information obtained, optimizes operating costs and unifies essential services in a single connected interface:

  •     Integrated fleet management;
  •     Workshop appointments and services;
  •     Automatic collection and processing of tolls;
  •     Management of battery charging sessions.


Smart charging solutions for electric vehicles

The transition to electric fleets brings specific logistical challenges, especially in terms of downtime. To support passenger and freight transport companies, VDO has developed dedicated charging solutions for depots and logistics centers for trucks, buses and special vehicles.

The new system connects vehicle operating data directly with the charging infrastructure and digital fleet applications. Dispatchers receive real-time critical information on:

  •     Battery level (State of Charge);
  •     Energy consumption per vehicle and route;
  •     Operational availability of units;
  •     Monitoring active charging sessions.

This integrated approach minimizes downtime and optimizes energy consumption across the entire warehouse.


Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV): A Single Source of Digital Architecture

As Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) become the norm in the commercial automotive industry, Aumovio positions itself as a complete systems provider, delivering a unified architecture that includes hardware, software, platforms and related services.

By providing key components from a single source — from high-performance computing (HPC) to connectivity modules and over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities — Aumovio enables truck and bus manufacturers to substantially reduce development cycles. Manufacturers can bring new technologies to market at an accelerated pace, managing increasingly complex technology platforms more efficiently.


Autonomous Trucks: The Solution to the Global Driver Crisis

The shortage of personnel is one of the biggest threats to supply chains. Aumovio estimates that the market will need more than 1.2 million truck drivers in the next decade.

To prevent a logistical bottleneck, Aumovio has entered into a strategic partnership with Aurora to develop and operate autonomous trucks, intended for roads in the United States starting in 2027.

The work is strategically divided between the two partners:

  1. Aurora manages the operation of the fleets and the integration of the sensor suite, LiDAR and video cameras.
  2. Aumovio provides the hardware platform, maintenance services, and redundant safety systems for emergency situations.

In the event of a major breakdown or a dangerous situation, advanced systems designed by Aumovio can take control to stop the truck safely on the side of the road, preventing any accident from occurring.


Critical components for total electrification

Completing the solutions portfolio, Aumovio develops a modern range of hardware components for electric vehicles, including advanced battery management systems (BMS), cell contacting systems and high-efficiency DC/DC converters.

All of this hardware works in sync with cloud monitoring applications on the VDO Fleet platform, giving transport companies complete control over the technical parameters of their eco-friendly fleets.
